How to Get Your Small Business Website Mentioned in AI Search

Updated: 14 hours ago

Why clarity, structure, and your voice matter more than ever

Here’s what no one tells you about AI search:

It’s not just summarising content - it’s borrowing it.

And if your website isn’t structured intentionally, your words might be used by AI tools... without credit, without links, without anyone ever visiting your site.

That’s what people mean when they say content is being scraped - AI pulls it from your site and uses it to answer someone’s question, often without mentioning where it came from.

Your blog posts, FAQs, and even your about page could be included in AI-generated answers - while your business stays invisible.

But here’s the good news:

There are ways to increase your chances of being credited and linked.

AI search is changing how people ask questions

In the past, people searched using short keywords - things like “nutritionist Brighton” or “back pain stretches.”

Now, with tools like ChatGPT and Bing Copilot, they’re asking full, conversational questions instead:

  • "What kind of nutritionist should I see if I’m tired all the time but don’t want to go on a restrictive diet?”

  • “How can I ease back pain if I sit at a desk all day?”

  • “What are some gentle ways to reduce anxiety without medication?”

Your content doesn’t need to sound technical or formal.

It needs to sound like you’re answering a real person’s question - clearly and helpfully.

If you run a small business website, especially as a service provider, it's more important than ever to understand how AI search works - and how to make sure your content gets seen and credited.

So how do you get your small business website mentioned in AI search?

These are the five things I now focus on when writing content for myself and my clients:

1. Answer Specific, Searchable Questions

The more specific your content is, the more likely it is to be picked up - and credited - by AI.

Think about what your audience is actually googling - not industry jargon, but real-life questions from real people.

Instead of writing a broad post like “Tips for a Healthier Life”, go specific:

  • “What’s the difference between a life coach and a therapist?”

  • “How can I improve my posture while working from home?”

  • “Is it normal to feel more tired during perimenopause?”

These are the kinds of questions your ideal clients are likely to type into search - and they’re exactly the kind of content AI tools prioritise when pulling answers.

2. Structure Your Posts Clearly

Clear structure helps both humans and AI understand - and link to - your content.

Break up your content with:

  • Headings that make sense on their own (H2s and H3s)

  • Short paragraphs

  • Lists or bullet points

  • Subheadings that reflect the kind of questions your audience is actually asking

AI tools crawl structure.

If they can’t follow the logic, they’re less likely to link.

3. Include Your Name or Business Naturally

AI tools can’t credit you if they don’t know who you are - so tell them.

Some AI tools do credit sources - but only if they know who to credit.

Mention yourself clearly in the body of the post:

  • “As a wellness coach working with women in their 40s...”

  • “In my work as a consultant for small businesses...”

  • “When I explain this to my clients in movement sessions...”

You’re not being promotional - you’re being clear about authorship.

4. Be Original - Avoid Generic, Regurgitated Content

If your content sounds like everyone else’s, AI will treat it that way.

AI is trained to avoid duplicating what’s already been said a hundred times.

So if your post sounds like every other “how to feel better” or “tips for success” article out there, it’s unlikely to be credited - and might be summarised or paraphrased instead.

Make sure your content has your voice and your angle.

Thoughtful insights, real-world perspectives, specific examples. That’s what makes it credible.

5. Keep It Public and Search-Friendly

If your site isn’t visible to search engines, your content can’t be found - or linked.

Make sure:

  • Your blog is public (not behind a paywall or members-only wall)

  • Your site is crawlable (check your Wix SEO settings or robots.txt)

  • You’re not blocking AI bots like ChatGPT or Bing (unless you’ve chosen to)

Final Thought

Don’t let AI tools take from your website without returning value.

AI tools are reshaping how people find and engage with content -but that doesn’t mean your content is powerless.

With a little clarity, structure, and originality, you can make sure your content shows up in the places that matter - and gets credited for the value it brings.

Because visibility still matters. And your voice deserves to be heard - and recognised.
